What is Pay As You Drive?

Pay As You Drive is a unique car insurance add-on that helps you save on premiums by paying only for the number of kilometres you opt to drive. It is a discounting-based add-on cover that adapts to your driving habits. So you pay comparatively lower premiums with Pay As You Drive car insurance add-on as it allows you to decide the kilometres you’ll cover in a given year and pay only for those kilometres.

And in case you exceed the kilometres you opted for, you can easily avail a top-up to extend your Own Damage coverage. On the other hand, if you drive less than the kilometres opted for, you can carry forward that unused distance to the next policy year.

Let's understand the concept of Pay As You Drive insurance add-on with an example. Suppose you're someone who usually drives an average of 2,500 km a year. It could be because you own two vehicles or you rely on public transport to commute or you're generally prudent when it comes to car usage. Pay As You Drive allows you to customise your car insurance where you pay only for the 2,500 km you drive. This will cost significantly lower than a standard car insurance plan. In case you drive more than that, you can avail a top-up to continue your car insurance coverage. And if you drive less than 2,500 km, then whatever unused kilometres remain can be carried forward to the next policy year.

Now Reliance General Insurance brings its very own Reliance Limit Sure - Pay As You Drive to be your trusted car insurance plan. You can customise as you will and save on premiums always.

What is Pay As You Drive?

How Does Reliance Limit Sure -
Pay As You Drive Work?

When you opt for Reliance Limit Sure - Pay As You Drive, you’re required to select an estimated distance that you’ll drive in a policy year. This estimated distance, called "Available Kilometres" or "Kilometre Limit", can be set in different slabs starting at 2,500 km. It can be increased in multiples of 1,000. Based on the Kilometre Limit you choose, you will be getting a discount on the Own Damage Premium. The lower your Kilometre Limit, the more discount you’ll get.

Also, you have to declare your current odometer reading at the time of buying and renewing the policy. This will help to determine whether you have stayed within the Kilometre Limit or exceeded it. For example, if your odometer reading at the time of buying the policy is 2,000 km and you opt for a Kilometre Limit of 2,500 km, then at the end of your policy, your odometer reading has to show 4,500 km or lower.

In case you run out of Available Kilometres, you can do a top-up with extra kilometres with the "Top Up Limit" feature to ensure you're covered for the rest of the policy period. In case you have any unused kilometres, you can carry it forward to the next policy year using the "Carry Forward Limit" option. We also give Grace Kilometres# up to 125 km to give you enough time to renew your policy before you run out.

To summarise, here's how it works:

  • Declare the odometer reading at the time of buying the policy
  • Select a Kilometre Limit starting at 2,500 km and customisable in multiples of 1,000
  • In case of an accident during the Kilometre Limit, then get financial coverage as per the Own Damage car insurance policy

Who Can Opt for
Pay As You Drive?

Pay As You Drive insurance add-on works best for those who drive their cars less. Instead of paying for a standard car insurance plan that doesn't factor in your car usage, you can get Pay As You Drive which calculates the premium based on the distance you cover. Here are some examples of who can opt for Pay As You Drive:

Infrequent Driver

You’re an infrequent driver

If you generally don’t drive your car around a lot or only take it out on certain occasions, then Pay As You Drive will work well for you since you pay only for the time you take your other car out.

Own Multiple Cars

You own multiple cars

If you own multiple cars, then one of your cars is used less frequently than the other. So, it makes sense to pay only for the kilometres you drive for the car you use irregularly.

If you’re inclined to use public transport more for your daily commute than your car, then getting your car insured with Pay As You Drive will ensure you pay only for a certain number of kilometres.
