What is a Duplicate RC?
A duplicate registration certificate (RC) is an authorised official document issued in place of the original RC by the Regional Transport Office in your city in case of loss or theft.
Your vehicle registration certificate is the most crucial document that is mandatory for driving anywhere in the country without attracting fines and other consequences. However, if you lose your original RC or it is stolen, you must get a duplicate RC to continue driving your vehicle in India.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is RC Important?
A soft or hard copy of the RC is mandatory. If not, the traffic authorities can confiscate your car and penalise you with a fine of Rs. 5,000 for the first offence and up to Rs. 10,000 for future instances.
What are the types of vehicle registration certificates?
There are two types of RCs:
Temporary Registration - As soon as you buy a car, the authorised car dealer assigns you a temporary registration number that is valid for a month. Within this period, you must apply for a permanent registration certificate for your car at the nearest RTO to avoid fines.
Permanent Registration - This is the number plate of your vehicle that proves your authenticity as the vehicle owner.
Do I need to apply for a duplicate registration certificate if I want to change my address in the original RC?
No, if you want to change your address in the existing RC, you do not need to apply for a duplicate RC. Instead, you need to apply for an endorsement request to get the changes updated on your RC, and your new RC with the desired amendments will be sent to you after the application is approved.
